Groundbreaking Set for Goose Pond Visitors Center

A popular southwestern Indiana bird-watching spot visited by two rare Asian guests this year likely will draw more human guests with a new visitors center.

Gov. Mitch Daniels will help break ground on the center Friday at Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area, about 35 miles southwest of Bloomington.

A curlew sandpiper that nests in Siberia and winters off the coast of Africa was spotted there in May. Birdwatchers from several states also flocked to Goose Pond in February to see an Asian hooded crane normally found in Russia, China and Japan

The Greene County Daily World reports ( http://bit.ly/PosCNN ) the Indiana Department of Natural Resources also will establish a regional headquarters there.

State Rep. Matt Ubelhor (YOO'-bell-or) says he expects the structure overlooking a marsh to open sometime next year.
